Zola Organic Farming Project
|
ZOLA was founded in
2003 in Zwelihle on the outskirts of Hermanus on a 800sqm of land
leased from the Overstrand Municipality. The Municipality also
supplied water and fencing. The project is under the care of
Margaret Mtomile (Leader) Eunice Lusiba,, Nellie George, Synthia
Mcinjana,Lessy Boto and David Sitemela. No pesticides are used and
compost is made on the premises. In 2007 the group won R50,000.00 in
the Western Cape Farmer of the Year competition. Some of this money
was donated to the H.I.V. care centre in Zwelithle as well as a
regular supply of fresh vegetables..
They are currently growing and
supplying Pick ‘n Pay with these vegetables:
Spinach, Tomatoes, Carrots, Cabbage, Spring onion, Greenpepper,
Beetroot
Their
vision is to address the food shortage and create income by working
to give a constructive example of managing a market garden.
With the
gift of a Wendy House the group now has an office. Soon they will
soon be extending their activities into a new area.
