Fun at cooking
competition
Women's Day has come and gone and in
Stanford great fun was had by women and
their families at a Cooking Competition
held in the local Community Hall.
The proceedings opened with a display of
Volkspele dances executed by Jock &
Fransie Pansegrouw, their excellent
singing accompanied by Miss Hampton on
the keyboard.
Participating teams excelled in their
choice of traditional recipes, as well
as decorating their tables and dressing
to a theme to add to the fun. The meal
which was in great demand was 'afval &
witmielies' - an unknown to many eager
tasters. Economical but delicious meals
such as tamatiebredie, hoenderkerrie en
rys, curried mince and dumplings, spicy
beans, umfino and umqa which are
favourites of Madiba, were cooked by the
10 teams and the judges were hard
pressed to declare a winner, resulting
in certificates being awarded for many
different categories.
During the day Joe Schoeman from the
Hermanus Fire Department spoke to the
teams about safety in the home,
especially when young children are
present. The Stanford Clinic had posters
and handouts on display to encourage
healthy eating, cleanliness and
following a sensible diet to strengthen
the body to fight diseases such as HIV,
TB and diabetes.
A demonstration on how to make a cheap
Wonderbox was given by Aldra McLachlan,
with a display of organic vegetables
from Appelsdrift Farm in Napier adding
to the décor.
Entertainment during the morning
included Spiritual Dancing by a young
group from Elim and after that Willie
Dempers and his band kept the tempo
lively with their music.
