BARTHO EKSTEEN SAUVIGNON BLANC CELEBRATION

Bartho Eksteen is the Winemaker and a Director at Hermanuspietersfontein Wingerde, Hemel-en-Aarde Village, Hermanus.

He graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1987 with a diploma in Pomology, Viticulture and Cellar Technology after which he entered employment in the Co-operative wine industry.  After a few years, he felt a calling to specialize in Sauvignon Blanc and left the co-perative industry to take up employment at Wildekrans, a private producer near Bot River in the Walker Bay, a cool wine region of the Western Cape.  Here he honed his craft and received many prestigious awards, amongst which SA Champion Young Wine in 1996.

Bartho eventually set out on his own and produced his first Sauvignon Blanc under his own trademark, Bartho Eksteen,  from 1998,  and continued producing many excellent vintages (who can forget the 2003 Premier Choix!), upgrading to Hermanuspietersfontein Wingerde when the opportunity arised

In 2005 he and Johan and Mariette Pretorius became partners and Hermanuspietersfontein WIngerde was born.  Through very selective participation in wine shows, this new Cellar has gathered an impressive list of accolades from among others, SAA, British Airways and Swiss International Airlines listings.  4 and 4 1/2 stars were awarded in the John Platter Wine Guide (2005 to 2009), as well as a SA Terroir Award in two consecutive years (2008 and 2009), amongst others.

Bartho instituted the Sauvignon Blanc Celebration in 1993, because of his passion for the cultivar.  He wanted to determine firstly where South Africa was positioned on the world scene and, secondly, how his own wines were faring against the rest.  He is expanding the format of the Celebration this year to include the Workshop where experience and knowledge of this amazing wine and -grape cultivar can be shared.

This year sees the 17th annual Celebration, indeed an occasion not to be missed!

BARTHO EKSTEEN SAUVIGNON BLANC CELEBRATION

The 17th Annual Sauvignon Blanc Celebration takes places at the Hermanuspietersfontein Wingerde, Hemel-en-Aarde Village, Hermanus on Friday 25th September 2009.

This year the Celebration will be run in conjunction with an exciting workshop conducted by world renowned Sauvignon Blanc producers and experts from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.

The workshop will cover vineyard practices specific to different styles of Sauvignon Blanc, as well as topics such as crushing, skin contact, yeast, filtration, stabilisation and general treatment.

Winemaker and organizer of the Celebration, Bartho Eksteen, invite Sauvignon Blanc entries to be submitted not later than 25 August.

The wines entered this year will be screened down to 9 finalists, which will be in the Celebration tasting run-up along with a Hermanuspietersfontein Sauvignon Blanc, selected by Bartho Eksteen, and 10 top international wines.

Bartho Eksteen, also known as the Sage of Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa, is still in the process of analysing and cataloging as many as possible South African Sauvignons Blancs. He encourages Sauvignon Blanc producers and winemakers to make their samples available, even if they do not want to enter their wines for the Celebration tasting. Bartho’s tasting notes and the wine’s profile will be made available to producers on request at a minimal fee.

Producers and winemakers are welcome to enter a vintage of their choice, as long as it will be available to the public if it happens to reach the top ten. For enquiries regarding samples, the screen tastings, the event itself and ticket sales, please contact Suné Eksteen 072 323 5060 or  SauvignonBlancReplies@cozalist.co.za.

Producers are requested to deliver 4 samples of the wine(s) they wish to enter to Hermanuspietersfontein Wingerde, Hemel-en-Aarde Village, Hermanus, for attention Suné Eksteen before 25 August 2009.

Though limited seats are available for both the workshop and the tasting, the workshop, tasting and celebration dinner are not limited to producers and winemakers and could also be booked individually.  Wine lovers and students of wine, who wish to extend their knowledge base, are equally welcome to attend this exciting event.

For more information or to book your seat, kindly contact Suné Eksteen on 072 323 5050 or SauvignonBlancReplies@cozalist.co.za.

 Hermanuspietersfontein Events 2009

Every Saturday Hermanuspietersfontein Food & Wine Market
9h00 – 13h00

Just as we revived the original name of Hermanus, we have revived the conventional Saturday morning community market as a food and wine market – a place where families go to buy produce, meet friends and generally rub shoulders with members of the local community. This takes place on the wide verandahs of the elegant yard of the cellar.
Breakfast or an early lunch can also be selected from a wide variety of food and enjoyed at tables under the umbrellas with a glass or a bottle of Hermanuspietersfontein wine.

Mid February- March Mosfees

Every Saturday During the coming harvest (mid February to end of March) visitors to the Food & Wine Market will be welcomed with a tot of must, a bunch of the grapes being pressed at that time and some Harvest Bread containing raisens representing the previous harvest and fresh grapes for the new. If we are lucky and pressing takes place on a Saturday, visitors will be able to watch this process right there in the yard. And watch the stalls for individual grape or wine-based specialities!
