Nosy Rosy’s hunk of the month is 25 year old tall, dark, brown eyed handsome Johannes Basson – a muso since birth and an old soul roaming the earth. Sigh – the female fans are all bound to be captivated by this up and coming talent in Hermanus.
He grew up with music and refers to himself as a Karoo mystic - a small town boy, who enjoys silence. He is passionate about merit and history. The one thing he has wanted to do all his life is make music. His first CD Road Trip was released in March 2007 and contains eight original tracks with music and lyrics by himself, except the lyrics to the third song, entitled Pontiac, which was written by his stepdad. “I have a good understanding of the music industry.” Johannes is putting a band together instead of just being a one man show and he can provide an hour of original material to perform, self composed of course.

Born in Cape Town, son of a “preacherman” (a retired Dutch Reformed ‘dominee’ with a very open mind) and an opera-singing, piano-playing mother, music is as natural to Johannes as breathing. His fondest memories are of the days the family lived in Stellenbosch and he, then only four years old, “attended singing lessons” with his mother. He grew up surrounded by a smorgasbord of music, shaping his future.

Johannes is at his happiest with his guitar, simply sitting busking on the street and earning a couple of hundred bucks. He had his first gig in Bredasdorp last week and they invited him back to perform in February.
Tucking into his steak with great relish – the two of us met for an early lunch at Europa – he says that food is another passion. And not just any food – quality food, fresh ingredients and laughingly says: “I spend way too much on food as my taste is too expensive.” And when he is not cooking pasta and writing lyrics and performing, he reads. He prefers fantasy “because it is escapism” and easily reads a 1 000 pages in three days. “I read myself right out of dyslexia and I am a bit of a philosopher, Plato and philosophy books are actually something else that I do read. All your neuropathyways are linked to what you see in your mind. I look at the word I a lot more than I look at myself, there is a parallel.”

As a teenager, he used to select certain tunes that sounded cool and then rewrite the lyrics. “I would say I am a fairly good musician but when I listen to a song I am more into the poetry of the song. Catchy non repetitive lyrics appeal to me, not modern pop music.” The added benefit of growing up on opera and classical music made him aware of the quality of lyrics.

Johannes has a natural talent for teaching the guitar and he had about eight students. “After five lessons, one guy could play up to my standard and I have been paying for 11 years.” He made Nosy Rosy giggle when he forthrightly says: “I went to school and in class I just listened to what they said and passed my exams pretty much on that. I am intelligent enough to be lazy.” An IQ of 135 testifies to this.

His stepfather chose the name of his first CD Road trip. Very listenable and a good mix of rock and blues. He unabashedly says: “Who is 25 and has been doing the same thing for 11 years? I am a self employed musician and that makes me feel self empowered. If I have my guitar I can make a career anywhere. As long as I have a guitar I am safe. I do not play my guitar, she plays me. At times my fingers just take over.”
Future plans include marketing the Johannes Basson band and he is still writing the material for his next album – recording to be finished by May. “It is rocky, bluesy jazz kind of stuff. It is like a rock fusion. Whatever I play I play rock and it sounds cool.” He also intends buying his first house before his 30th birthday.

With the Johannes Basson band in the making (consisting of a vocalist, lead guitarist and drummer) he feels a bit over extended, fulfilling the role of manager, fashion and image consultant, distribution, production and even secretarial work. But he loves what he is doing, promoting his music. He has come to realise that you can only do it for yourself. “Time should be worth more to you than anyone else, I have the need to feel important to myself – I do not need to impress anyone. I do not aim to be accepted. I am well reserved in public but one day I want to write a book entitled Nice. Instead of being nice, you have to be sincere and respectful - life is not about being nice. My honesty is probably my biggest blessing and also my greatest curse. I do not lie, owning up to whatever I did, I will tell the truth.”

Nosy Rosy sees your name in lights Johannes!
