Ardmore ceramics & The Launch of the new Mavromac fabric range
at The Marine Hermanus.
"There is a seductive collection of textures,
patterns and embroideries to satisfy those longings for hand-crafted
and unpretentious design, with lashings of accessible chic." The
Collaboration with Ardmore Design continues: Sisters-in-law, Fee
Halsted and Marguerite Mavros Macdonald, have been working for over
a year on a fabric range inspired by Ardmore Ceramics. In this
exciting undertaking, restraint and convention give way to wild
imagination and exuberant colour.
This venture is a wonderful new beginning for Ardmore and Mavromac.
“It is one of the most original and exciting ranges I have ever had
the pleasure to work with," says Marguerite of the new creations.
Nosy Rosy Article by
Danica Clea Kreusch.
It is part of today’s
human nature to find crockery and cutlery that deviate from the
norm. We seem to go after cups with funny or cute images printed on
them, spoons with designs on the handle, plates with painted
decoration and the like.
But never before has the creativity of
practical ceramics been taken to the visionary extreme that Ardmore
ceramics provides.
Ardmore Ceramic Arts was the brainchild of Fée Halsted during the
1980’s. After completing her BA Honours in Fine Arts, Fée began
Ardmore on her farm of the same name that is nestled in the
foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal. The first
artist to join Fée in her venture was Bonnie Ntshalintshali, the
daughter of their housekeeper, whose Polio prevented her from
working in the fields and thus earning an income. Under Fée's
mentorship Bonnie's natural artistic skills were honed and it was a
short five years later that they were recognised and awarded the
prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award. This led to such an
increase in the demand for their work that Fée extended the
opportunity to train at Ardmore to other local women.
Fée and her family later moved to Springvale Farm in Rosetta in the
KZN Midlands, allowing the artists at the Berg Studio in the
Champagne Valley to explore their independence. A smaller studio was
set up in Springvale and the work continued, finally becoming
exhibited at the Bonnie Ntshalintshali Museum, which was created in
honour of Bonnie’s death due to HIV/AIDS in 1999. A second move
found the Halsted family relocating the museum and studio to the
Caversham Valley, which would become the amalgamated home of the
Berg and Springvale studios in 2009.
The exuberant exotic style that has made Ardmore sought-after and
famous was developed out of the habit of covering cracks in tiles
with animals. In 2010 the Ardmore Design Collection was launched, a
collection which translated Ardmore's distinctive imagery and
styling into functional, superb quality ceramic and non-ceramic
products including dinnerware, tapestries, furniture, fabrics for
soft furnishings, and more. Ardmore continues to grow in such ways,
providing training, direction, materials, a studio and a guaranteed
market as well as leadership opportunities, health benefits and a
healthy meal to all its artists. Currently there are over 70 artists
at Ardmore and their abilities, community engagement and worldwide
appeal simply grows by the day. While Ardmore never forgot its
routs, the ceramics are now available in America, Japan, China,
Canada, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, London, Sweden and
Switzerland.
Ardmore Ceramics are creative, vibrant modern day collectables that
benefits not only its artists but also whoever chooses to take one
of its spectacular pieces home with them. For more information on

Some people have asked if our prices are
competitive – yes they are as we believe in good quality at good
prices.
This is possible because we have very little
overheads selling from home so our mark-up is small. We don’t
advertise in order to keep our costs down so we rely on you to
tell all your friends about us and how good our prices are.
We try and bring different things that are not
available in South Africa to increase our stock variety every
month.

the
little shoppe was born just over a year ago. the
aim has always been to sell only locally produced
products and to show case work of artists from in
and around our community. with a smalll budget and
an even smaller space (3m2) the shoppe opened it's
doors in March 2008. the reaction to the idea was
overwhelming, as was the realisation that there are
many very talented artists, especially from the
local township who where more than struggling to
make ends meet. We needed more space and with
guidance from an angel, faith, hope and a dream we
jumped at the chance to move into #3 Warringtons.
The dream is to have a shoppe that would provide
local artists a space to showcase their work and a
wire studio that could sustain the income of the
artists involved, to expand our range and complete
more orders, to create work for more artists over
time and to export. We current have three full
time artists with three more who would add work on
consignement and help with design and manufacture
of large orders. The first samples of our work have
left the shores and we are in the process of
developing a christmas range for export. The urgency
of sustaining this dream and developing it is more
relevant now with the current economic developments
world wide. We have been truelly blessed in this
space. The opportunity to showcase local work
combined with the studio where people could interact
with the artists and discuss and order their own
ideas is unique. As always the challenge is in
sustaining the concept. We have completed several
large local orders successfully: 25 condiment
baskets for Fusion cafe, 300 keyrings for Southern
Stroll for the Indaba, 15 display stands, and over
100 baskets for packaging for The Earth Collection,
DVD display stands for Fastrax Media, along with a
variety of unique designs for local and
international visitors. The shop still stocks only
SA merchandise of which 90% are handmade from our
area and everything has a story... either that of
the artist, the project we support, the material
used etc.
Our range includes handmade wooden puzzles and sof
toys for children, scatter cushions and aprons made
by learn to earn, wire jewerly and handbags by
Xhenoga, paintings from local artists, handpainted
matchboxes and fridge magnets, deli products like
olive oil, hot sauses, olives, Rooibos chilli spread
and teas and a multitude of wire designs to name but
a few...
