Walk
for CANSA
Lianda Beyers Cronjé
One of
the biggest and most heart warming community
events of the year, the Overstrand CANSA Relay
For Life (RFL) is once again taking place at the
sport ground of Hermanus High School on Saturday
27 February to
Sunday 28 February 2010.
This is
the second year that the overnight mega
fundraising team event, which attracted a
record-breaking crowd from all wakes of life
last year, will be presented.
Aimed at
celebrating cancer survivors and remembering and
honouring loved ones lost to cancer, the event
provides the opportunity to everybody in the
community to join the fight against cancer and
to show that they care.
Says
Rykie Venter, project facilitator of CANSA’s
Overberg region: “Not only a show case for our
local CANSA office, the event also creates
awareness of cancer prevention, early detection
and care that are so important if we want to
reduce the impact of cancer.
Teams of
people will be camping out at the high school
during Saturday and Sunday and take turns
walking or running around the track. Each team
will have a representative on the track at all
times during the event.
We regard
the Relay For Life as a celebration of life and
an opportunity for individuals to support people
who have been diagnosed with cancer. It offers
hope and greater insight to family and friends
of cancer survivors and is regarded as a healing
experience by the survivors who have the
opportunity to meet and talk to others in a
similar situation.”
Currently, the number of teams who have already
registered for the 2010 Overstrand Relay For
Life is standing at 22. Businesses, NGO’s and
individuals are urged to enter teams as soon as
possible in order to make the logistical
arrangements for the event easier. Teams who
enter before 31 January will have first choice
in booking their stands. However, there will
still be time to register teams up to the last
moment. Registration costs R500 per team of 10
and R50 for each additional member up to the
maximum of 15. Children under 10
(accompanied by their parents) will be
able to participate for free.
One of
the most moving moments of the event is the
ceremonial lighting of candles in “Luminaria”
bags to remember and honour loved ones lost to
cancer. This year, people will also be able to
buy “luminaria” bags for beloved pets that have
died of cancer. The bags can be bought at the
CANSA office in Onrus, the Pam Golding office in
town or Emily van der Merwe at 028 314 0636 or
082 550 8260.
The gate
will open at 11:30 on Saturday 27 February for
teams who still want to enter at the last minute
or put up their stands and tents, while day
visitors are welcome from 14:00 until 22:00. The
opening ceremony will be held at 16:00 on
Saturday, followed by the moving “Survivor lap”
around the track. Survivors (anybody that has
ever been diagnosed with cancer) are urged to
contact Emily van der Merwe as soon as possible.
The closing ceremony will start at 07:00 on
Sunday morning.
The 2009
Overstrand ‘s
CANSA Relay For Life proved to be one of the
greatest community events ever held in the area
and all indications are that 2010 will even be
bigger. Contact Rykie Venter at the CANSA office
in Onrus (028 316 3678) of 084 515 4176 for more
information.
