What every man should know
Prostate and testicular cancers are the most
common cancers amongst men apart from skin
cancer. Early detection increases the
probability for effective treatment thereby
reducing its impact on the lives of those
affected by it.
The prostate gland is an organ of the male
reproductive system. It is a small organ that
manufactres semen that feeds and transports
sperm cells. Prostate cancer is generally
associated with men in their later years.
Every man from the age of 40 should go for a
digital rectal examination at least once a year,
which is a quick & simple procedure. PSA is a
blood test that measures the PSA levels (PSA is
a protein that is produced by prostate cells).
Men with high PSA-levels are encouraged to have
a biopsy done (a specimen is taken from the
prostate gland) to determine whether cancer
cells are present.
Early warning signs are difficulty urinating,
trouble with starting to urineate and to stop
and an increasing need to urinate – most
especially at night times.
During June and July 2009 CANSA in association
with Pathcare is offering PSA blood tests across
the Western Cape at a reduced tariff of R 68.00
at all Pathcare Depots. Pathcare Hermanus is
situated in the Medical Centre.
