Blue Flag beaches of South Africa
Hawston achieved blue flag status
Grotto Beach
in Voëlklip
Hermanus offers long stretches of sand for the most energetic of
hiker, uninterrupted views for romantic strolls and has been
awarded blue flag status. This annual award has grown from only
three beaches in 2001 to 34 this year. Grotto Beach met with all the
standards of excellence required by the department under the Coast
care programme. Only beaches that achieve world class standards may
fly the very prestigious blue flag.
A blue flag beach has to meet standards of excellence of the areas of
water quality, environmental education and information, environmental
management and safety services, offer top notch life saving standards,
effective top-rate ablution and parking facilities and of course
access for the disabled.
Onrus Beach

Onrus Beach
is a hotspot for surfers and here you are guaranteed to catch a wave.
It has a lagoon area suitable for young tots to splash around in and
the restaurant with the best view of Onrus beach, is The Milkwood. It
is the only restaurant in Hermanus to serve abalone on a permanent
basis and they offer 5 different fish varieties.
Voëlklip Beach

Voëlklip
Beach
has a long winding path
down to the beach area - as well as ablution facilities. Here the whales can be
found frolicking in the Atlantic ocean even towards the end of
November. Well worth a visit for the sheer beauty of the environment.
