Did you see the insert on The Hermanus Whale Festival
that was aired on Friday 30 October on MNET between 15h30 and 17h00?  The Festival was aired on all SABC news channels on 28 and 29 September, radio coverage included KFM, 702, Cape Talk, Good Hope and RSG. The value of marketing via the festival for Hermanus and the Overstrand is valued at over R4M. Visitor counts of 100 000 with an estimated spend of over R10M further contributed to our local economy, the detailed visitor survey as well as business and stall holder surveys confirmed these estimates. An interesting outcome of the business survey was that 50% of businesses surveyed, experienced an increase in turnover and sales volumes as compared to the 2008 festival and 67% of these businesses experienced an increase of feet into their businesses. What recession as we talking about?

National electricity supplier Eskom, and now the National Government has earmarked Bantamsklip on the southwestern Overberg coast as one of the preferred sites for its nuclear power station ‘roll out’ – initially a single 4000 mega watt nuclear plant – a European Pressurised Reactor (EPN) was proposed, now two such plants are envisaged for Bantamsklip. The problem is, it lies within the hottest internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot (presently registered as a S A Natural Heritage Site and a Historic Monument) and adjacent to the most valuable marine ecosystem in Africa (Dyer Island Nature Reserve and Great White Shark Marine Sanctuary) The plant and the resulting power lines would destroy the livelihoods of virtually everybody dependent on the natural environment of the area and seriously impact the tourism industry of the Cape Whale Route and the Fynbos route. The Hermanus Animal welfare charity shop in Mitchell Street needs your help. This shop is their main source of income and for the past few months has not had very much coming in. They are struggling financially at present and are moving into the Xmas season and it is vital to have goodies to sell. Please dig into your cupboards at home, clean out and see what you are able to donate to the shop – kitchen goodies and bric-a-brac, clothes, books, furniture – really anything that someone else would find interesting or that the poorer folk could use. If you have a box of stuff and are unable to get to the shop, please call them on 028 3121800 and they will arrange to have it collected. You can also leave it at the kennels and ask Monique at the front to get it to the shop.

Overstrand Learning Academy leaners handed over a cheque to Animal Welfare recently. Please take a look on our social page.

Restaurant Updates

Jaci from
Wine & Company is delighted to inform our readers
that Chef Wayne Spencer has saved the day! Where Restaurant Joubert used to be (right next door to Wine & Company), a brand new restaurant. Hermanos - Spanish for 'brothers' has seen the light of day - as Wayne and his brother have gone into partnership – and opened their doors on Friday, 23 October.  It was well worth the wait! Wayne is concentrating on local produce both food-wise and wine-wise with the emphasis on price and quality - excellent quality without the hefty price tag! For now Hermanos will be open for dinner only and to check out what's on offer you can visit their website at: www.hermanos.co.za. Reservations: 028 313 1916 open 18:00 till late. The restaurant will be closed on Sundays.

Fusion Café at the Village Square Waterfront Piazza, remains a firm Nosy Rosy favourite and this family run eatery, with gastronomic bistro style food, recently launched a pilot project to curb the dangers of drinking and driving. Well done Fusion for your initiative! Bookings for breakfast, lunch and dinner can be made on 028 312 4277.

Warwick’s Restaurant at Sumaridge
Wine Estate in the scenic Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is open for lunch from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 15:00. Enjoy European Michelin star excellence in a setting fit for kings! We dare you to make your booking today! Read more.

The Nosy Rosy sisters spent a languorous Saturday afternoon at Feathers Bistro in the Hemel-en-Aarde Shopping Village. We were spoilt for choice but opted for the smoked chicken and tatziki salad, spaghetti with baby tomatoes, basil, garlic and mozzarella cheese, a delicious smoked salmon and cream cheese open sandwich, ample portions and decidedly more-ish, the young ‘uns settled for Caz’s home-made scones and cream and decadent death by chocolate cake and the bill for 6 of us - excluding the wine supplied by the inimitable Paul from the Wine Village - a mere R245. Well worth a visit as was evident by the number of locals we spotted!

Tapas is the gathering place of locals and passers-by and Nosy Rosy particularly enjoys the cosmopolitan ambience. Tapas has had a facelift and we can vouch that the food is divine and the ambience world-class. Tapas is located between The Burgundy Restaurant in Harbour Road and the newly paved parking area at
Lemm's corner. Crazy specials at Happy hour every day between 17:00 and 18:00.

Community initiatives
The countdown to Christmas has begun and in the spirit of giving, Hospice invites you to make a donation – a gift of love – by purchasing a light for R50 for their special Tree of Lights. This can be an outright donation or in memory of a family member or friend. In the latter case it will be a thoughtful gift just before Christmas which so often is a sad time for those who have suffered a loss. Their Tree Lightening ceremony will take place on Thursday, 3 December 2009 from 19h30 for 20h00 outside the Hospice Shop in Aberdeen Street. Please feel free to bring your own picnic basket and blanket, alternatively refreshments will be available.

"The Bags of Love”  is a feeding scheme aimed at sending a message out to the “Poorest of the Poor” during the Christmas period when most folk are eating like kings (even during the recession) that " WE CARE". We give parishioners a Pick ‘n  Pay Green eco bag together with a list of what should be put into it. (Basic Commodities) Last year, we raised cash funds from donors and included sweets for the children and biscuits for the Oldies. This year with the situation being critical we will raise extra cash funds to add some extras into bags for large families.(Mieliemeal, Samp.etc). It is important to understand that this project spans all religions and races, last year we managed to fill 520 bags, the Dutch Reform Church  got 150, the Anglicans took a 100, the Bosco Mission got 65 for families of their schoolchildren. The balance was distributed by the Catholic Church mostly through Social Welfare.

This year we aim to fill a minimum of 1000 bags. The project committee is made up of members of the Catholic, Anglican and Dutch Reformed Churches. We will be approaching and encourage all the different churches in Hermanus to get involved and support this now annual event. Starting with 100 bags a few years ago we have doubled the quantity every year since then

The idea is that Parishioners should take bags and fill them when they do the monthly shopping; ideally the children should be involved to make them aware of what some people are surviving on.

We appeal to everyone who can possibly help, to do so e either by filling bags or making a cash donation.  All donations will be acknowledged and a Tax Certificate issued on request.

Bags can be obtained though your Church or by contacting any of any of the Committee members listed below:
